The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a severe warning regarding the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in southern Afghanistan, where crippling poverty, acute food shortages, and systemic unemployment are threatening thousands of vulnerable households.

According to the agency’s latest assessment, communities across southern provinces are enduring compounding structural shocks that have rapidly eroded local coping mechanisms and basic subsistence resilience.

Surging Malnutrition and Acute Resource Deficits

Humanitarian field reports highlight a alarming deterioration across public health and environmental sectors:

  • Rising Child Malnutrition: Acute malnutrition rates among children under five have surged dramatically, driven by severe household food insecurity, prolonged regional drought, and inadequate emergency nutrition coverage.
  • Severe Water Scarcity: Groundwater depletion and dried-up agricultural infrastructure have left vast rural communities without access to clean drinking water, exacerbating sanitation crises and waterborne disease outbreaks.
  • Decimated Healthcare Services: Public health facilities across southern districts face chronic medicine shortages, inadequate staffing, and insufficient operational funding, leaving critical pediatric and maternal care largely inaccessible.

Contamination from Explosive Remnants of War

Compounding the daily struggle for survival is the persistent threat posed by explosive remnants of war (ERW) and unexploded ordnance (UXO). Decades of conflict have left extensive land tracts, grazing fields, and transit routes contaminated with unexploded landmines, posing lethal risks to civilian returnees, agricultural workers, and children searching for firewood or water.

UN OCHA stressed that without immediate international funding injections, expanded humanitarian access, and comprehensive mine-clearing operations, millions of residents across southern Afghanistan face catastrophic long-term economic, physical, and nutritional fallout.
