At least four people were killed and eight others sustained serious injuries following a fatal traffic accident in the mountainous northern province of Badakhshan late Saturday evening.

According to official statements from the de facto provincial security command, the incident occurred in the Kala Qashqar area of Yaftal Ulya district. A Land Cruiser-type passenger vehicle lost control and overturned while traversing rugged terrain along the provincial transit corridor.

Emergency Response and Air Transfers

De facto security personnel and local first responders arrived at the crash site to extract victims from the wreckage:

  • Medical Evacuations: The eight surviving passengers, several of whom suffered critical injuries, were urgently transported to the provincial central hospital in Fayzabad for emergency treatment.
  • Aero-Medical Logistics: Due to the severe geography and long overland distances, de facto authorities utilized military helicopter transport to convey the bodies of the deceased back to their home district of Kuf Ab.
  • Casualty Summary: Four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while medical staff in Fayzabad continue to monitor the remaining survivors.

Neglected Roads and Rising Transit Casualties

The tragedy in Yaftal Ulya reflects a broader pattern of frequent, fatal road accidents across northern Afghanistan.

Transportation monitors attribute the high rate of vehicular fatalities in peripheral provinces like Badakhshan to a combination of unpaved mountainous tracks, reckless driving, uninspected vehicles, and a lack of state investment in basic highway safety infrastructure. Without systemic road rehabilitation and stricter vehicle safety standards, remote rural communities remain at constant risk during routine transit.
