The Acting Representative of Afghanistan at the United Nations, Nasir Ahmad Faqeh, has called on the UN Security Council to initiate a “genuine intra-Afghan political process” aimed at addressing the country’s political challenges.
Faqeh urged the Security Council to support a process facilitated by the United Nations but led and owned by Afghans. He emphasized the importance of allowing Afghans themselves to determine the direction and outcome of the political process.
The call comes as Afghanistan continues to face complex political, security and humanitarian challenges. Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, questions surrounding political representation, governance and engagement with different Afghan groups have remained central to international discussions on the country’s future.
Faqeh’s appeal places emphasis on an inclusive Afghan-led dialogue, with the United Nations playing a mediating and facilitating role. Such a process, according to the request, would provide a platform for Afghan stakeholders to discuss the country’s political future and seek common ground.
The Afghan representative’s remarks also come amid ongoing international efforts to engage with Afghanistan and address concerns related to governance, human rights, security and humanitarian conditions.
The proposal calls for the UN Security Council to take an active role in supporting a political process while ensuring that Afghans retain ownership of the dialogue and its outcomes.
