China’s representative at the United Nations Security Council has said restrictions imposed on women by the Taliban are negatively affecting Afghanistan’s social and economic development.

Speaking about the situation in Afghanistan, the Chinese representative called on the Taliban to respect the fundamental rights of all Afghan citizens, including women. He said that although some positive developments have taken place in Afghanistan, the country continues to face complex challenges, particularly in the areas of human rights and terrorism.

According to the Chinese representative, restrictions on women and girls are having wider consequences for Afghanistan’s development and social progress. He stressed the importance of protecting the rights of Afghan citizens as the country works to address its ongoing challenges.

The Chinese official also called on the international community to assist Afghanistan in gradually integrating into the global community. He said continued international engagement and support could help Afghanistan address its economic, social and security challenges.

The remarks come amid continued international concern over restrictions affecting Afghan women and girls, including limits on education, employment and participation in public life.

China has maintained engagement with the Taliban while also calling for greater international cooperation to support Afghanistan’s stability and development. The Chinese representative’s comments underline Beijing’s position that Afghanistan’s future stability requires progress on both security and human rights issues.
