De facto Taliban security forces in northeastern Badakhshan province have expanded surveillance drone operations across the provincial capital, Fayzabad, in response to escalating attacks and security pressure from anti-regime armed factions.

According to reports from local sources and regional monitors, de facto authorities have established a specialized drone operations and reconnaissance center on Koh-e Minar hill—a strategic elevated site commanding an expansive view of Fayzabad city and surrounding approach routes.

Surveillance Push and Counter-Insurgency Escalation

The operationalization of the new facility underscores the de facto administration’s increasing reliance on unmanned aerial systems and modern surveillance assets to secure key urban hubs in northern Afghanistan:

  • Strategic Positioning: The installation on Koh-e Minar hill enables de facto forces to conduct continuous visual surveillance and signals monitoring over Fayzabad’s urban sectors, adjacent mountain corridors, and transit routes connecting to nearby districts.
  • Targeting Opposition Activity: The expanded drone patrols follow a wave of guerrilla strikes, explosive detonations, and targeted attacks by armed opposition movements, including the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) and National Resistance Front (NRF), across Badakhshan province.
  • Gathering Regional Intelligence: In addition to immediate urban monitoring, the facility serves as a tactical intelligence-gathering node designed to track insurgent movement along remote mountain supply lines and border areas.

Modernizing Regime Security Apparatus

The establishment of dedicated drone centers highlights a broader tactical shift within the de facto security structure. Facing persistent hit-and-run tactics by mobile guerrilla units across rugged northern terrain, the administration is increasingly turning to aerial surveillance technology to compensate for conventional ground surveillance limitations and maintain control over historically volatile provincial capitals.
