KABUL: The Taliban authorities have made changes to the leadership of education departments in Kandahar and Herat provinces, according to local sources.
Sheikh Mohammad Dawood, a former member of the Central Ulema Council of Kandahar, has been appointed as the new head of education in Kandahar.
Meanwhile, Maulvi Fakhruddin Naqshbandi, who previously served as the head of education in Kandahar, has been appointed to lead the education department in Herat.
The changes are part of administrative appointments made by the Taliban authorities as they continue to reorganize provincial departments across Afghanistan.
The education sector remains a major area of international attention in Afghanistan, particularly because of restrictions affecting girls’ access to secondary and higher education. Taliban authorities have maintained their policies despite repeated calls from the United Nations and other international organizations for broader access to education.
The latest appointments change the leadership of education departments in two of Afghanistan’s major provinces. Further details about the responsibilities and priorities of the newly appointed officials were not immediately available.
