The Taliban leadership has dismissed Mohammad Ismail Ghaznawi from his position as governor of Badakhshan and appointed Rahmatullah Najib as his replacement, according to a statement by the group’s spokesperson.
Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada approved the removal of Ghaznawi and appointed Najib, who previously served as the group’s deputy interior minister, as the new governor of the northeastern province.
The leadership change comes amid recent tensions in Badakhshan, where the Taliban has faced growing security and political challenges. The province has also witnessed reported resistance activity and unrest in recent months, making it a strategically sensitive area for the Taliban authorities.
The Taliban has not provided detailed reasons for Ghaznawi’s dismissal. However, the timing of the decision, following recent tensions in the province, has prompted speculation about whether the leadership change is connected to the deteriorating security and political situation.
Rahmatullah Najib is expected to assume responsibility for provincial administration and security affairs in Badakhshan. His appointment of a senior Interior Ministry official could indicate an effort by the Taliban leadership to strengthen control and security coordination in the province.
Badakhshan remains one of Afghanistan’s key northeastern provinces, bordering Tajikistan, China and Pakistan-administered territory. Its strategic location and recent instability have increased its importance for the Taliban government.
