Taliban authorities have reportedly closed approximately 100 shops in the Jibril area of Herat province following a dispute over ownership of land in the center of the area.

Sources in Herat told local media on Monday, 15 Sunbula/Shahrivar, that shops located in the covered market of Jibril were closed by Taliban authorities. The action reportedly followed an individual’s claim of ownership over parts of the land in the central area.

The closure has affected a large number of traders operating in the market, potentially disrupting the livelihoods of families dependent on these businesses. Details about the individual making the ownership claim, the legal documents involved and the Taliban’s justification for closing the shops have not been fully disclosed.

Land ownership disputes remain a sensitive issue in Afghanistan, where competing claims over property can lead to prolonged legal and administrative conflicts. Such disputes can have a direct impact on local residents and business owners, particularly when commercial areas are involved.

The latest development has raised concerns among shopkeepers and residents who may face financial losses if the market remains closed for an extended period. It is also unclear whether the affected traders were given prior notice or whether they have been provided with an alternative means of resolving the dispute.

No detailed public statement from Taliban authorities regarding the closure has been reported so far.

Further clarification from local officials and the parties involved could determine the legal status of the disputed land and whether the shops will be allowed to reopen.
