The Taliban’s Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has approved the detailed plan for a special settlement for returning Afghan migrants in the Dasht-e Shor area of Mazar-i-Sharif.

According to the ministry, the settlement will be developed on a plot covering 8,859 jeribs. Under the plan, each family will reportedly receive a 500-square-meter residential plot.

The planned township is expected to include residential homes along with a mosque, school, educational facilities, clinic, sports grounds, parks, green spaces and other basic services. The Taliban Ministry of Urban Development said the plan aims to ensure the organized use of government-owned land and provide housing opportunities for returning migrants.

However, the authorities have not yet disclosed how many families will be accommodated in the settlement, when land distribution will begin or which categories of migrants will qualify for the scheme.

There are also no clear details about the estimated cost of developing the infrastructure or how the project will be financed.

The Taliban has previously announced plans to establish special settlements for returning migrants in several Afghan provinces, with land distribution reportedly already beginning in some areas.

According to the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees, more than 8.177 million Afghans have returned or been deported to Afghanistan from neighboring countries over the past five years. The return process continues as Afghan migrants face ongoing pressure to leave several neighboring countries.

The scale of the proposed settlement reflects the growing demand for housing and basic services as large numbers of Afghans return to the country.
