KABUL: Former Wolesi Jirga member Kamal Nasir Osoli has marked the 30th anniversary of the death of former Afghan president Dr. Najibullah, describing him as a figure whose legacy remains significant in Afghanistan’s history.
In a post on his X account, Osoli said Najibullah was hanged by forces opposed to him, describing the events surrounding his death as a lasting trauma for the Afghan nation. He said that despite his death, Najibullah has remained present in the pages of Afghan history.
Osoli also criticized political and armed figures who opposed Najibullah during that period. He said their positions and actions had been judged negatively by history and claimed that many Afghans now reject their ideas.
According to Osoli, the passage of time has strengthened the memory and national stature associated with Najibullah. He described the former president’s legacy as an example of patriotism and national pride for younger generations of Afghans.
Dr. Najibullah served as president of Afghanistan from 1987 until the collapse of his government in April 1992. He remained in Kabul after leaving office and was later killed by the Taliban in September 1996 after the group entered the capital.
The anniversary has continued to prompt discussion among Afghans about Najibullah’s political legacy, the conflicts of the late 20th century and the impact of those events on the country’s subsequent history.
