Local officials in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province say more than 908 kilograms of the precious stone known as Beruj has been sold to traders for 154 million and 621 thousand Afghanis.

According to the officials, a total of 908.09 kilograms of the stone was sold in Kunar, generating a reported value of 154.621 million Afghanis.

The transaction highlights the continued commercial activity surrounding Afghanistan’s mineral and precious-stone resources. Provinces in eastern Afghanistan, including Kunar, are known for deposits of various minerals and gemstones.

Local authorities did not provide further details about the number of traders involved in the purchase, the exact origin of the stone or whether additional quantities are expected to be sold.

The reported sale also reflects the economic importance of Afghanistan’s natural resources, which include gemstones and minerals found in several parts of the country. The sector has the potential to generate revenue and provide income for local communities, although questions surrounding regulation, transparency and sustainable extraction remain important.

Officials in Kunar have previously reported commercial activity involving natural resources in the province. The latest transaction places the value of the reported Beruj sale at more than 154 million Afghanis.

Further details about the stone’s buyers, intended use and whether the revenue will contribute to local or government income were not provided in the initial announcement.
