An attempted forced abduction of a young woman in the Babaji district of Helmand province escalated into violence, leaving two civilians severely wounded after armed men opened fire on resisting family members and local residents.

According to local sources reporting to Afghanistan International, the incident occurred around midday when an armed group of approximately ten men attempted to forcibly seize a girl from her father’s home.

Refusal of Proposal and Violent Escalation

The attempted abduction reportedly followed the rejection of a marriage proposal put forward by an affiliated religious cleric:

  • Coercive Retaliation: Sources stated that a local mufti affiliated with the de facto administration sought to marry the woman. After her family refused the proposal, a group of armed men targeted the family home.
  • Community Resistance: Family members and neighbors intervened to prevent the abduction, prompting the armed attackers to discharge live ammunition into the crowd.
  • Critical Casualties: A female relative of the young woman sustained serious gunshot wounds during the shooting. Additionally, a local resident identified as Mohammad Dawood was critically injured and remains hospitalized in a coma.

Displacement Context and Official Investigation

The victim’s family, originally displaced from Ghor province, has resided in the Babaji district of Helmand for an extended period.

Local sources noted that the armed men involved in the raid did not hold formal positions within official security units. Following public outrage over the shooting, de facto local authorities in Helmand transferred the case files to Kandahar, while a joint investigatory delegation from Helmand traveled to Kandahar to assess the incident and review judicial steps.
