Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states have called for the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan, emphasizing that the participation of all ethnic and political groups is essential for achieving lasting peace and stability.
The leaders stressed that Afghanistan’s future should be based on a political framework that represents the country’s diverse population. They argued that meaningful inclusion of different ethnic, political and social groups could help reduce tensions and create the conditions necessary for sustainable peace.
The call comes amid continued international concerns over Afghanistan’s political situation under the Taliban administration. Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, questions over political inclusivity, human rights and the representation of Afghanistan’s diverse communities have remained central to discussions about the country’s future.
SCO member states have repeatedly highlighted the importance of preventing Afghanistan from becoming a source of regional instability. The organization has also emphasized cooperation among neighboring countries on security, counterterrorism and economic development.
The leaders’ latest position reflects a broader regional push for an Afghan political settlement that can bring together different sections of society. They maintained that an inclusive political system would provide a stronger foundation for peace and help Afghanistan strengthen relations with neighboring countries.
The statement also underscores the growing importance of regional diplomacy in addressing Afghanistan’s political and security challenges.
