Footage circulating on social media shows de facto Taliban militiamen entering a restricted border zone in Badakhshan’s remote Wakhan Corridor, where Chinese border guards issued direct warnings in English ordering the fighters to vacate the area immediately.

The interaction, recorded near the strategic Wakhjir Pass along the high-altitude Afghanistan-China frontier, exposes the underlying security distrust and militarization defining Beijing’s approach toward the de facto administration.

Militarized Perimeter and Border Enforcement

Visual evidence and satellite analysis confirm that Chinese security infrastructure along the narrow Wakhan border is heavily fortified:

  • Double-Layered Fortifications: China has installed two layers of reinforced barbed wire, electronic surveillance camera networks, and elevated watchtowers commanding views over the Wakhjir Pass.
  • Active Guard Interventions: Chinese border patrols routinely issue bilingual warnings to prevent unauthorized crossings into Xinjiang, maintaining zero-tolerance enforcement for uncoordinated movements near the frontier.
  • Discrepancy with Official Claims: While de facto authorities recently inaugurated a 121-kilometer unpaved transit road extending through the Wakhan Corridor, the route terminates directly at China’s closed military fencing.

Beijing’s Security Imperative

Despite ongoing diplomatic dialogue between Beijing and de facto officials in Kabul, Chinese authorities maintain a strictly closed border due to deep-seated security apprehensions. Beijing remains particularly concerned about potential infiltration by militant groups, including the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM/TIP), across the rugged Pamir terrain.

While de facto authorities continue to promote the Wakhan route as a future direct trade link to bypass reliance on Pakistani ports, Beijing has declined to open the border post or authorize commercial transit, leaving the corridor firmly locked under heavy Chinese military surveillance.
