Writer and political activist Shoray-e Sharq has described opposition to the Taliban as a response to what she characterizes as the group’s authoritarian approach and policies toward Afghan society.
Speaking on Monday evening, October 5, Sharq said confronting the Taliban should be understood in the context of the group’s governance and the policies it has implemented since returning to power.
She argued that the Taliban’s approach has created concerns among sections of Afghan society and said opposition to the group is connected to objections over its political and social policies.
Sharq, who has been critical of the Taliban, did not limit her comments to a specific political or security development. Her remarks focused broadly on the nature of Taliban rule and the reasons she believes some Afghans continue to oppose the group.
The Taliban has defended its governance system and policies as being based on its interpretation of Islamic law and national interests. However, Afghan activists and rights groups have continued to raise concerns over restrictions on political participation, freedom of expression and the rights of women and girls.
Sharq’s comments reflect the position of an individual political activist and should not be taken as an independent assessment of all Afghan public opinion.
The political and security situation in Afghanistan remains contested, with the Taliban maintaining control of the country while various political and armed opposition groups continue to challenge aspects of its rule.
