KABUL: Dajont Noorestaani, spokesperson for the Nationwide Council of the Noorestaani ethnic group, has claimed that Afghanistan Freedom Front forces continue to hold several Taliban outposts in Kamdesh district of Nuristan province.
Noorestaani said clashes between Taliban forces and opposition fighters in Kamdesh and neighbouring Nari district of Kunar province are continuing.
According to him, Freedom Front forces captured several Taliban positions during the recent fighting in Kamdesh and have maintained control of those outposts.
The clashes come amid competing accounts from the Taliban and the Freedom Front over the scale and outcome of the fighting in eastern Afghanistan. The Freedom Front has claimed that its fighters captured several positions and inflicted casualties on Taliban forces, while Taliban authorities have issued a different account of the clashes.
The Taliban Defense Ministry previously claimed that 28 members of an opposing group were killed and 32 others captured during fighting in Nuristan. Taliban authorities have also alleged that some of those involved were linked to Daesh/ISKP and received support from Pakistan.
The Freedom Front has rejected the Taliban’s account and disputed claims that its fighters were captured.
The latest claims regarding control of the outposts and the continuation of fighting could not be independently verified. Access to the affected areas remains limited, making it difficult to establish the precise battlefield situation.
