At least 17 Afghan migrants, including several children, have reportedly died of thirst in Iran’s southeastern Saravan region near the border with Afghanistan, according to preliminary reports.

The migrants died at a location known as Mak Sookhta in the Roteck border area of Saravan. Reports said the bodies were later shifted to Khash because of a lack of space in the cold storage facilities in Saravan. The incident reportedly happened last Thursday.

Among those reportedly killed were five members of a family from Afghanistan’s Baghlan province. The victims included a 45-year-old woman and her four daughters, whose ages were reportedly between 14 and 22.

According to initial information, the migrants were exposed to extreme heat and severe water shortages while staying in the border area. The harsh environmental conditions are believed to have contributed to the reported deaths.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by Afghan migrants traveling through remote and difficult border areas, particularly during periods of extreme heat and limited access to water and basic facilities.

However, the details remain preliminary. The reported number of deaths and the exact causes have not been independently verified, and further information is expected to emerge as authorities and local sources investigate the incident.
