The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported four new positive cases of polio in Afghanistan, raising fresh concerns over the continued spread of the disease in the country.

In a report published on Sunday, August 23, the WHO said two of the newly identified cases were recorded in Shindand and Adraskan districts of Herat province.

Another case was reported from Dila district in Paktika province, while the fourth case was identified in Raghistan district of Kandahar province.

The latest reports highlight the ongoing challenge Afghanistan faces in eliminating polio. The country remains one of the few places in the world where wild poliovirus transmission continues, making vaccination and disease surveillance particularly important.

Health authorities and international organizations have continued efforts to expand vaccination coverage and prevent further transmission, particularly in areas where children remain at greater risk of missing routine immunization.

The detection of new cases also underscores the importance of sustained polio vaccination campaigns, community awareness and timely identification of suspected infections.

The WHO has repeatedly emphasized the need for continued cooperation between health authorities, communities and humanitarian organizations to protect children from the potentially disabling disease.

With four additional cases reported across Herat, Paktika and Kandahar, health officials face continued pressure to strengthen vaccination efforts and prevent the virus from spreading to other parts of Afghanistan.
