GENEVA — The international community has intensified pressure on the ruling administration in Kabul following a decisive move at the United Nations. The UN Human Rights Council adopted a comprehensive resolution urging the Taliban to immediately repeal all policies, decrees, and practices that systematically strip women and girls of their fundamental rights and freedoms in Afghanistan.

Unanimous Global Condemnation

The resolution, brought forward with broad international backing including sponsorship from numerous European nations alongside Canada and Chile, passed without a vote at the Geneva-based body.

Member states expressed grave alarm over the escalating deterioration of human rights under de facto rule, highlighting that institutionalized restrictions on education, employment, and public movement amount to severe systemic oppression. Human rights monitors noted that the consensus-driven vote reflects a unified global stance rejecting the regime’s continuous erasure of female participation in civic life.

Extending Accountability Mechanisms

Alongside the demand for policy reversals, the council voted to extend the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan for another year, ensuring continued oversight and documentation of violations.

As international scrutiny mounts—bolstered by parallel accountability steps from global tribunals regarding gender-based persecution—analysts emphasize that the regime faces deepening diplomatic isolation unless it reverses course on its repressive governance model.
