Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has appointed senior loyalists to key positions in Badakhshan province amid growing concerns over anti-Taliban violence in the northeastern region.

According to reports, Mullah Rahmatullah Najib has been appointed governor of Badakhshan, while Mullah Ahmad Shah Dindost has been named the province’s new police chief. The appointments are being viewed as an effort by the Taliban leadership to strengthen administrative and security control over the strategically important province.

The reshuffle comes amid a reported increase in anti-Taliban attacks in Badakhshan. Recent violence has reportedly claimed the lives of the mayor of Faizabad and the provincial director of information and culture, highlighting growing security challenges facing Taliban officials.

Badakhshan has remained a sensitive region for the Taliban because of its strategic location along Afghanistan’s northeastern borders and the presence of anti-Taliban resistance activity. The province has also witnessed clashes between Taliban forces and resistance groups in recent months.

The appointment of figures considered loyal to the Taliban’s supreme leadership could indicate an effort to ensure stronger coordination between provincial administration and security forces. It may also reflect concerns within the Taliban leadership over maintaining control amid increasing attacks.

The latest changes come as the Taliban continues to face security challenges across several parts of Afghanistan, despite maintaining control over the country’s major urban centers and government institutions.

The impact of the new appointments on the security situation in Badakhshan remains to be seen, particularly as tensions and resistance activity continue in the province.
