Three representatives of the Afghan Taliban have arrived in Berlin as part of a technical support team tasked with helping facilitate the documentation process for Afghan nationals facing deportation from Germany.
According to Germany’s Foreign Office, the representatives entered the country on 30-day visas issued through Qatar. Their arrival is aimed at establishing mechanisms that would allow Afghan diplomatic missions in Germany to issue travel and identity documents recognized by authorities in Kabul.
Technical Support for Deportations
The representatives are expected to assist German authorities in developing procedures for processing the documents required to return Afghan nationals to Afghanistan.
The arrangement is intended to address one of the key logistical challenges involved in deportations, particularly the issuance and recognition of travel documents for individuals whose identities or nationality need to be formally confirmed.
Germany Seeks Increased Deportations
The move comes as Berlin seeks to increase the deportation of Afghan nationals from Germany. Cooperation on documentation with Afghanistan’s de facto authorities could make it easier for German authorities to carry out future removals.
The involvement of Taliban representatives also reflects the practical engagement taking place between Germany and Afghanistan’s de facto administration on specific issues, despite the absence of formal diplomatic recognition.
