KABUL — The Taliban’s Ministry of Education has extended its strict oversight over academic institutions by banning the holding of any ceremonies or commemorative events to mark World Teachers’ Day. Administrators from multiple private and public schools confirmed that strict directives were issued to prevent any gatherings honoring educators.
The move comes at a time when teachers across Afghanistan face severe economic hardship, drastic salary cuts, and mounting professional constraints. For female educators in particular, the ongoing restrictions represent another heavy blow, arriving amidst systemic bans on secondary and higher education for girls.
While global communities utilized World Teachers’ Day to praise the resilience of Afghan educators and emphasize the vital role of education in society, local authorities moved to block any public recognition. School officials noted that the prohibition reinforces an increasingly restrictive environment within the country’s educational sector, leaving teachers isolated as they struggle to sustain basic livelihoods under the de facto administration.
