De facto Taliban authorities have imposed sweeping restrictions on mental health counseling services across health centers, clinics, and public medical institutions in Kandahar province, alongside eliminating several specialized psychological support positions within government hospitals. Medical sources report that directives to halt mental health activities have intensified significantly, compounding the vulnerability of local populations facing severe socio-economic collapse.

Healthcare providers highlight that the clampdown on psychological care coincides with an alarming rise in severe mental health distress. Over the past two years, approximately eight suicide cases have been recorded in Kandahar alone, including incidents involving young women. Clinicians note that women and girls account for roughly one-third of patients seeking treatment for acute neurological and psychological disorders, driven by widespread unemployment, extreme family economic pressures, and suffocating educational and social restrictions.

The systematic restriction of mental health infrastructure exposes the de facto administration’s profound disregard for basic public health needs. By dismantling support systems and suppressing psychological intervention, ruling authorities aggravate an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis, leaving traumatized citizens without avenues for medical relief or professional care.

For neighboring countries, including Pakistan, the deteriorating humanitarian and psychological landscape inside Afghanistan underscores the relentless spillovers of instability. Unchecked societal despair, lack of basic livelihood prospects, and institutional failure continue to fuel irregular migration pressures and humanitarian burdens throughout the region.

International health organizations emphasize that accessible mental health care, compassionate intervention, and psychological support are critical lifelines for populations trapped in protracted conflict. Without reversing regressive policies and restoring essential medical services, Afghanistan faces deepening human devastation and long-term societal fracturing.
