Taliban Minister of Commerce and Industry Nooruddin Azizi has emphasized the need to expand economic relations and engagement with the international community during a meeting with the United Kingdom’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Richard Lennie.
According to reports, the two sides discussed economic relations and Afghanistan’s engagement with the international community. Azizi said the Taliban administration seeks to develop relations with other countries on the basis of mutual respect.
The Taliban commerce minister highlighted economic cooperation as an important area for strengthening ties between Afghanistan and the international community. He also expressed the administration’s interest in expanding engagement with foreign governments and institutions.
Richard Lennie, the UK Special Envoy for Afghanistan, has been involved in diplomatic engagement concerning Afghanistan and discussions with Taliban officials on issues affecting the country.
The meeting comes as the Taliban authorities continue efforts to increase Afghanistan’s economic and diplomatic engagement with the outside world. Since taking control of the country in 2021, the Taliban administration has sought greater international interaction while facing continued concerns over its policies and restrictions, particularly regarding women and girls.
Economic engagement remains a key issue for Afghanistan, where authorities have sought increased trade, investment and access to international markets.
Azizi’s remarks indicate that the Taliban administration views economic cooperation and mutual engagement as important elements of its desired relationship with other countries.
