Tajikistan is reportedly considering a complete closure of its border with Afghanistan amid growing concerns over cross-border terrorism, drug smuggling and regional security threats.

Afghan citizens are already barred from entering Tajikistan, but escalating security concerns are reportedly pushing Tajik authorities to consider stricter measures, including sealing the border entirely.

The potential move would represent a significant shift in Tajikistan’s border policy, moving beyond active defence measures toward a strategy focused on full regional containment. Authorities are increasingly concerned about possible militant infiltration, illicit trafficking and other security challenges along the mountainous frontier.

The Tajik-Afghan border has long been viewed as a sensitive security zone because of its difficult terrain and proximity to areas affected by militant activity and drug trafficking. Tajikistan has repeatedly strengthened security measures along the frontier and maintained a cautious approach toward developments in Afghanistan.

A complete border closure could have wider consequences for cross-border movement, trade and humanitarian access. It could also further complicate Afghanistan’s already limited regional connectivity and relations with neighbouring Central Asian states.

The proposal comes as Tajikistan continues to monitor the security situation in Afghanistan and assess potential threats spilling across its southern border. Any final decision to completely seal the frontier would likely depend on the evolving security environment and assessments by Tajik authorities.
