KANDAHAR — While Kandahar functions as the unofficial power center of the Taliban regime, a stark contrast defines daily life in southern Afghanistan. On one side, luxurious residential palaces and high-profile construction projects are transforming the upscale township of Aino Mina; on the other, widespread poverty, hunger, and street begging plague ordinary citizens.

Recent findings reveal that high-ranking Taliban officials, business tycoons, and wealthy elites have concentrated their wealth and investments in Aino Mina. Spanning over 20,000 acres in northern Kandahar, the township has seen a surge in elite housing and grand commercial endeavors. Notably, the Taliban’s deputy prime minister for economics recently inaugurated a massive 27-story project known as the “Shahaneh Tower,” carrying an estimated price tag of $25 million.

Despite these flashy developments, transparency regarding the ownership and funding sources of these properties remains murky. Many senior Taliban officials have reportedly moved into or taken over luxury residences within the township. Critics and opposition groups point out that this sudden accumulation of wealth by the ruling class stands in sharp defiance of the grim socio-economic reality outside Aino Mina’s gates, where thousands struggle daily just to find basic survival and work.
