Former Afghan Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar has condemned recent remarks by a Taliban official concerning the Persian language, describing them as part of an effort that could fuel division and weaken national unity in Afghanistan.

Atmar criticized the comments in a recent statement, arguing that language is an important part of Afghanistan’s cultural and social identity. He warned that remarks targeting one of the country’s major languages could contribute to tensions among different communities.

The former foreign minister said efforts to create divisions over language and cultural identity would not serve Afghanistan’s national interests. Instead, he emphasized the importance of preserving unity and respecting the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity.

Persian, commonly known as Dari in Afghanistan, is one of the country’s two official languages alongside Pashto. Both languages are widely spoken across Afghanistan and have played significant roles in the country’s history, literature, education and public life.

Atmar’s comments come amid renewed debate over language and national identity under Taliban rule. Critics have previously raised concerns about policies and statements they believe favor one linguistic or ethnic group over others.

The former foreign minister urged Afghans to reject attempts to exploit linguistic differences and instead focus on shared national interests.

His remarks reflect broader concerns among Afghan political figures and civil society voices that divisive rhetoric could further strain social cohesion at a time when Afghanistan continues to face significant political, economic and humanitarian challenges.
