Former Afghan Army Commando Corps commander General Farid Ahmadi has said that the liberation of parts of Badakhshan could potentially create an opportunity for the establishment of a government in exile.

Ahmadi raised the issue in a post on X while reposting reports about clashes involving the Afghanistan Freedom Front in Badakhshan.

The former military commander suggested that developments on the ground in Badakhshan could have wider political implications for opposition groups challenging Taliban rule. In his view, gaining control or establishing a stronger presence in the province could provide a potential geographical and political base for efforts to form an alternative government outside Afghanistan.

Badakhshan has remained one of the areas where anti-Taliban armed groups have reported military activities and clashes with Taliban forces. The province’s strategic location and mountainous terrain have also made it significant in Afghanistan’s wider security dynamics.

Ahmadi’s comments come amid continued reports of armed confrontations between Taliban forces and opposition groups in northern Afghanistan. However, the possibility of establishing a government in exile remains a political proposition, and there has been no indication that such a government has been formally established.

The statement highlights the growing political ambitions being expressed by some figures associated with Afghanistan’s former security and military structures.
