The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has announced that its member states have finalized a list of equipment intended to strengthen Tajikistan’s border protection capabilities along its frontier with Afghanistan.
CSTO Secretary General Talatbek Masadykov told Russia’s TASS news agency that member states had reached agreement on the equipment required to support security along the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border. According to Masadykov, shipments will begin once the necessary administrative and executive preparations are completed, with the first deliveries expected to reach Tajikistan in the fall of this year.
Masadykov said CSTO members consider the current measures for protecting the border insufficient and stressed that strengthening Tajikistan’s border capabilities is a shared concern for all member states of the organization.
The Tajikistan-Afghanistan frontier remains a major focus of CSTO security planning in Central Asia. Tajikistan shares a long border with Afghanistan and has repeatedly raised concerns over potential threats emerging from Afghan territory.
These concerns include the possible expansion of armed group activity, cross-border smuggling and wider instability linked to developments inside Afghanistan. In response, the CSTO has increasingly emphasized strengthening the border surveillance, equipment and infrastructure capabilities of its Central Asian members.
The planned deliveries represent another step in efforts to reinforce Tajikistan’s ability to monitor and secure its frontier. The move also reflects broader regional concerns about the potential spillover of insecurity from Afghanistan into neighbouring Central Asian states.
Tajikistan’s CSTO membership allows the country to seek collective security support from fellow member states as regional governments continue to monitor developments along Afghanistan’s northern borders.
