KABUL — Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture has launched a five-day scientific and cultural workshop focused on reforming and standardizing the spelling systems of the Dari and Pashto languages.
The workshop, titled “Reform and Standardization of the Spelling Methods of the Dari and Pashto Languages,” is being organized by the Commission of the High Council of Languages under the ministry’s Deputy Ministry of Culture and Arts.
The opening session was held at the National Museum Hall and brought together senior ministry officials, academic representatives from Kabul University and the Academy of Sciences, researchers, linguists and members of the media.
According to the organizers, the initiative aims to strengthen the linguistic foundations of Dari and Pashto, promote greater consistency in written communication and improve literary and language standards.
The workshop is expected to provide a platform for academics and language experts to discuss existing spelling practices and explore ways to establish more unified approaches to writing both languages.
Dari and Pashto are among Afghanistan’s major languages and are widely used across the country in education, media, government and literature. Efforts to standardize spelling and writing practices could contribute to greater consistency in educational and official materials.
The initiative also highlights the continued focus of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture on language and literary affairs.
