The Afghan Freedom Front (AFF), led by General Yaseen Zia, is reportedly mounting fierce resistance against Taliban forces in Zebak district of Badakhshan, with clashes continuing for several days.
According to reports, the resistance movement is gaining strength as former Afghan security personnel are reportedly returning to the battlefield and joining the fight against Taliban forces. The reported increase in manpower could potentially strengthen the AFF’s operational capabilities in the region.
The nature of the fighting is also reportedly changing. While anti-Taliban resistance groups have previously relied heavily on hit-and-run attacks and short engagements, reports suggest that AFF fighters are increasingly involved in sustained and more conventional battles with Taliban forces.
This development has raised speculation that the Afghan Freedom Front could gradually evolve from a smaller resistance network into a more organized military formation, potentially developing into a full-fledged brigade.
Badakhshan has remained an important area for anti-Taliban resistance activity, particularly because of its mountainous terrain and the presence of former Afghan security personnel. However, the scale and long-term sustainability of the reported resistance remain difficult to independently verify.
If the reported expansion continues, the AFF’s growing organization and manpower could become a significant factor in Afghanistan’s evolving security and political landscape.
