Armed opposition activity in Badakhshan’s Zebak district has reportedly intensified, with the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) claiming fresh clashes with Taliban forces.

The latest developments come after earlier operations in which opposition fighters reportedly captured several Taliban positions and district facilities for a limited period. The incidents prompted the Taliban to deploy significant reinforcements to Badakhshan, highlighting the strategic importance of the province and the growing security pressure facing the group.

The renewed clashes suggest that armed resistance groups continue to maintain operational capabilities in parts of northern Afghanistan. While the Taliban remain in control of the country, opposition activity in remote and strategically important areas presents an ongoing challenge to their security apparatus.

At the same time, reported tensions involving dissident commander Juma Khan Fateh have added another layer of uncertainty in Badakhshan. The disputes are reportedly linked partly to disagreements over mining interests and local authority, exposing divisions among actors operating within or around the Taliban’s power structure.

The developments present the Taliban with what could become a two-front challenge in Badakhshan: increasing armed resistance from opposition groups and internal fractures involving influential local figures.

If the clashes and internal disputes continue, they could further complicate the Taliban’s efforts to consolidate control over the province and maintain stability in areas where local power dynamics remain particularly complex.
