The United States has delivered a firm response to the Taliban’s efforts to normalize relations, indicating that Washington has not made a significant change in its policy toward Afghanistan’s ruling authorities.

The Taliban has sought to take advantage of President Donald Trump’s interest in economic agreements and access to strategic mineral and energy resources. The group has reportedly hoped that greater economic cooperation could help improve relations with Washington and open Afghanistan’s market to Western investment, particularly from the United States.

However, several issues continue to complicate the relationship. The detention of American citizens in Afghanistan, concerns over the Taliban’s relationship with al-Qaeda, and the group’s expanding economic and political engagement with Iran remain major points of contention for Washington.

At the same time, relations between the Taliban and Pakistan have deteriorated, while Islamabad has maintained close ties with the White House. This regional shift could further influence Washington’s approach toward Kabul.

The Taliban has repeatedly called for stronger international engagement, diplomatic recognition and the reopening of foreign missions in Kabul. It has also promoted Afghanistan’s natural resources as an opportunity for international investors.

Despite these efforts, Washington continues to maintain a cautious position toward the Taliban. The lack of formal recognition and ongoing disagreements over the group’s domestic policies remain significant obstacles to normalization.

The latest response suggests that the Taliban’s hopes of using economic opportunities to rapidly improve relations with the United States may face considerable challenges. For now, political and security concerns continue to outweigh the potential economic benefits of closer U.S.-Afghanistan ties.
