The British government has updated the information of Sirajuddin Haqqani, leader of the Haqqani Network, and his late father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, in its Afghanistan sanctions list.
According to the updated information, both Sirajuddin and Jalaluddin Haqqani remain subject to UK sanctions. Restrictions including asset freezes and travel bans continue to apply, meaning the latest action does not represent their removal from the sanctions list.
The changes were made to update identification details associated with the two individuals. The information includes details such as ethnicity, place and date of birth, height, passport information and records of their activities.
Sirajuddin Haqqani is identified as the leader of the Haqqani Network, a group that has been subject to international sanctions and has played a significant role in Afghanistan’s security and political landscape. He currently holds a senior position within the Taliban government.
The UK’s updated entry for Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the Haqqani Network, also references reports concerning his death in September 2018. British authorities describe him as a former Taliban leader who was primarily involved in armed activities in Afghanistan’s border regions.
The clarification is significant because updates to sanctions listings can sometimes be misinterpreted as changes to an individual’s sanctions status. In this case, the British government has explicitly maintained the existing restrictions while updating the personal and biographical information attached to the entries.
The move indicates that the UK continues to maintain sanctions-related measures against Sirajuddin Haqqani while retaining historical information concerning his father and the network he founded.
