A water supply project reportedly benefiting around 30,000 residents of Kabul has sparked criticism after Taliban officials inaugurated the initiative while acknowledging financial support from UNICEF.

According to the claims, Maulvi Sahib Ahmad Jan Bilal inaugurated the water supply project, which reportedly has a budget of 30 million Afghanis. During the inauguration ceremony, it was announced that UNICEF had provided the funding for the project.

The announcement has prompted questions over the role of Taliban officials in inaugurating projects financed through international humanitarian assistance. Critics argue that if the project was funded by UNICEF, the contribution of the international organization should be clearly acknowledged rather than allowing Taliban officials to receive political or public credit for externally funded humanitarian work.

The controversy reflects broader debates surrounding the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. International organizations, including UNICEF, continue to provide support for essential services such as water, sanitation, health and assistance to vulnerable communities.

Access to safe drinking water remains an important humanitarian issue in Afghanistan, particularly in densely populated areas where communities face economic hardship and inadequate infrastructure.

Critics of the Taliban argue that international aid should be presented transparently, with clear information about who financed, implemented and managed individual projects. They say transparency is important to ensure that humanitarian assistance is not used for political publicity.

The reported inauguration has therefore generated discussion over the Taliban’s relationship with international aid organizations and the extent to which externally funded projects are being portrayed as government achievements.

The funding details and implementation arrangements of the project should be independently verified through official UNICEF and local project records.
