Prominent journalist and women’s rights advocate Lina Ruzbeh has issued a sharp critique against the de facto Taliban administration, accusing the group of inflicting severe structural damage on the Pashtun community by systematically neutralizing its educated class, tribal authorities, and cultural elites.

Writing on her official X account, Ruzbeh asserted that the Taliban’s internal security apparatus has intentionally targeted influential Pashtun figures across various provinces. The targeted categories include academic scholars, traditional tribal elders, former military personnel, civil society activists, authors, journalists, and cultural artists.

Systematic Suppression Behind Mono-Ethnic Facades

While foreign observers often mistakenly view the Taliban as a monolithic vehicle for Pashtun dominance, human rights analysts and intra-community advocates emphasize that the regime’s ideological framework actively suppresses traditional Pashtun leadership structures:

  • Erosion of Tribal Authority: By assassinating or marginalizing non-conforming tribal elders (msharan), the de facto regime dismantles traditional community governance and replaces localized dispute resolution with autocratic cleric-led enforcement.
  • Neutralization of Educated and Military Personnel: Former officers of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANDSF), independent journalists, and university intellectuals within Pashtun-majority provinces face persistent surveillance, extrajudicial detentions, and targeted killings.
  • Cultural and Intellectual Deprivation: By silencing Pashtun writers, poets, and artists, the de facto administration seeks to suppress secular and moderate Pashtun identity in favor of an unyielding, totalitarian ideological doctrine.

Ruzbeh’s statement underscores a growing consensus among Afghan civil society figures: the Taliban’s campaign of repression is not strictly multi-ethnic or regional, but functions as a comprehensive crackdown against any educated or influential segment of society capable of challenging religious autocracy—regardless of ethnic alignment.
