KABUL: Sources in Nuristan and Kunar provinces have claimed that Taliban casualties from recent clashes with Afghanistan Freedom Front forces are significantly higher than the figures publicly announced by Taliban authorities.

Sources told local media on Monday, 5 Miizan/Mehr, that a number of bodies of Taliban members were seen or transported from areas affected by the fighting. However, the total number of casualties remains unclear.

The claims follow recent clashes between Taliban forces and the Afghanistan Freedom Front in Kamdesh district of Nuristan and Nari district of neighbouring Kunar province. The Freedom Front has claimed that dozens of Taliban members were killed and wounded during the fighting, while also saying that some Taliban positions were captured.

Taliban authorities have provided a different account of the clashes. The Taliban Defense Ministry previously claimed that 28 members of the opposing group were killed and 32 others were arrested. Taliban officials have not confirmed the latest claims concerning higher casualties among their forces.

The Freedom Front’s casualty figures and territorial claims have also not been independently verified.

The conflicting accounts highlight the difficulty of obtaining independently verified information from conflict areas in eastern Afghanistan. Access to affected locations, limited independent reporting and competing statements from the parties involved can make it difficult to establish the precise number of casualties.

Further information is expected as additional details emerge from Nuristan and Kunar regarding the scale and consequences of the clashes.
