Around 10 people are trapped under rubble following the collapse of a mine in Chah-e-Ab district of Takhar province, according to the Taliban governor’s office.

The Taliban said the mine collapsed at a depth of around 55 metres. Rescue teams have so far excavated and cleared more than 40 metres of rubble as they continue efforts to reach those trapped underground.

According to the Taliban authorities, the condition of the trapped individuals is stable. Oxygen is also being supplied into the tunnel to meet their needs while rescue operations continue.

Mine collapses in Chah-e-Ab are not uncommon, with similar incidents occurring in the district in recent years.

About a year and a half ago, a tunnel at a gold-washing facility in Samti village collapsed, killing nearly four workers. In February 2025, two gold miners also died after a mine collapsed in the same area.

Local mining activities in Takhar have faced concerns over safety standards and supervision. These factors have been cited as contributing to repeated accidents in the province’s gold-mining areas.

Rescue operations are continuing, while further details about the condition of those trapped remain awaited.
