Reports from Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province allege that local residents are being forced into illegal mining activities under Taliban control.

According to the reports, people in the province are allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment while their labor and locally available natural resources are being seized without their consent. The allegations have raised concerns over forced labor, exploitation and the control of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth.

Badakhshan is known for its significant mineral resources and has long attracted interest because of its deposits of gold, gemstones and other valuable minerals. For local communities, mining can provide an important source of income when conducted legally and under appropriate regulations.

However, the reported forced involvement of residents in mining operations has raised serious concerns about labor rights and the protection of local communities. Critics describe the alleged practices not simply as unauthorized mining, but as a broader form of exploitation involving forced labor and the appropriation of natural resources.

Such allegations also raise questions about how Afghanistan’s mineral resources are being managed under the Taliban authorities and whether local communities are benefiting from the extraction of resources from their areas.

The claims have not been independently verified, and further information is needed regarding the scale of the alleged activities, the individuals or entities involved and the conditions faced by local workers.

If confirmed, forced labor and the seizure of resources would represent serious concerns for human rights and economic justice in Badakhshan, particularly for communities already facing significant social and economic pressures.
