Tal’at Bik Musadduqov, Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has expressed concern over the security situation along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, warning that any major incident could have consequences beyond Tajikistan.

Speaking to Russian state news agency TASS, Musadduqov said the first shipments of weapons and military equipment intended to strengthen Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan are expected to arrive in Dushanbe this autumn.

According to the CSTO chief, Russia is playing the leading role in supplying the equipment and armaments as part of efforts to reinforce Tajikistan’s border security.

Musadduqov emphasized that instability along the border should not be viewed solely as a Tajikistan-related issue. He warned that if a serious security incident were to occur, it could potentially affect all member states of the CSTO, as well as other countries belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The comments reflect continuing regional concerns over Afghanistan’s security situation and its potential spillover effects on neighbouring Central Asian states. Tajikistan shares a long and strategically sensitive border with Afghanistan, making border security a major concern for Dushanbe and its regional partners.

The planned deliveries of military equipment indicate growing efforts by Russia and the CSTO to strengthen Tajikistan’s defensive capabilities amid concerns over possible cross-border threats.

The development also highlights the broader regional focus on preventing instability in Afghanistan from spreading into Central Asia.
