In an alarming cross-border act of political harassment, prominent Afghan filmmaker and academic Aziz Dildar was brutally assaulted by four individuals identified as Taliban supporters in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The targeted violent assault occurred on Monday, 4 Aqrab (October 26), taking place directly in front of Dildar’s young children and causing severe psychological distress to his family.

Targeted Violence Against Exiled Artists

Eyewitness accounts and diaspora reports indicate that the assault was explicitly tied to Dildar’s long-standing cinematic work and public advocacy criticizing totalitarian ideology and human rights abuses in Afghanistan:

  • Assault in Front of Family: The attackers confronted and physically beat Dildar while he was with his children, escalating concerns regarding the physical security of Afghan refugees and political dissidents residing in western nations.
  • Intimidation of Exiled Voices: Dildar, known for producing acclaimed cinematic narratives on Afghan social issues and democratic resilience, has been a vocal critic of the de facto regime’s ban on arts, culture, and independent media.
  • Severe Bodily Harm: The assault left the filmmaker with physical injuries, prompting immediate intervention by local law enforcement and emergency medical services in Virginia.

Transnational Threats to the Afghan Diaspora

The incident in Virginia underscores an alarming trend of transnational intimidation, where supporters and sympathizers of the Kandahar-based regime target exiled journalists, filmmakers, and civil rights activists operating abroad.

Afghans in exile, civil society coalitions, and international human rights advocates have strongly condemned the assault, calling on U.S. federal and state law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident as a hate crime and ensure the full legal prosecution of the perpetrators.
