A former member of Afghanistan’s military forces, identified as Jawad, has reportedly been detained by the Taliban in Najrab district of Kapisa province, according to local sources.

On September 20, that Jawad, a resident of Darah-ye Hazrat Farokh Shah in Najrab, had been missing for around 10 days. After several days without information about his whereabouts, he reportedly contacted his family and informed them that he had been detained.

According to the sources, Jawad’s phone is under Taliban surveillance, and several of his friends have also reportedly been detained after their connections were identified through his phone.

The sources said Jawad had previously served in the security forces of the former Afghan government. They added that his brother is currently a member of the Taliban in Najrab district. Due to the family’s difficult economic circumstances, his brother has reportedly taken Jawad’s wife and children under his care.

There are also concerns that other former military personnel and individuals associated with Jawad could be at risk of detention. However, no further information has been made available regarding the location of Jawad’s detention, the reason for his arrest, or the current status of his friends.

The report comes amid longstanding allegations that former Afghan security personnel have faced detention and other abuses following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. The latest claims could not be independently verified.
