The United Arab Emirates and 42 other United Nations member states have condemned what they described as systematic gender-based discrimination and restrictions against Afghan women and girls.
In a joint press release issued through the UAE’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the countries said sustainable development, peace and stability in Afghanistan cannot be achieved without the full implementation of the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda.
The statement called on the Taliban to immediately remove restrictions imposed on Afghan women and girls and restore their fundamental rights. The demands include ensuring access to education, healthcare and employment, as well as allowing women to participate fully and actively in public, social and diplomatic life.
The countries emphasized that the inclusion and participation of women are important for Afghanistan’s long-term development and stability. They also urged the Taliban to address policies that limit women’s role in society and prevent them from contributing to the country’s economic, social and public life.
The joint statement reflects continued international concern over restrictions affecting Afghan women and girls since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. The signatories reiterated that women’s rights and meaningful participation should remain central to international efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and sustainable development in Afghanistan.
