National Resistance Front of Afghanistan leader Ahmad Massoud has criticized European countries for engaging with the Taliban over the repatriation of Afghan migrants, warning that such cooperation could strengthen the group.

Speaking online at the “European Wendtothen Conference for Freedom and Democracy,” Massoud said engaging with the Taliban to achieve short-term objectives could help consolidate the group’s position.

Massoud argued that European policies focused on immediate goals, including the return of Afghan migrants, could have broader political consequences for Afghanistan. According to him, such engagement strengthens the Taliban and may encourage the group to adopt an even more extreme position.

He also warned that continued international engagement with the Taliban could undermine the hopes of Afghan people seeking political change and a more inclusive system of governance.

Massoud has repeatedly called for greater international pressure on the Taliban and for support for a political process that gives Afghans a role in determining their country’s future.

European governments, meanwhile, have faced increasing pressure over the status of Afghan migrants and the need to manage migration and deportation arrangements. European officials have sought practical engagement with Afghan authorities on issues including migration, despite continued concerns over human rights and restrictions imposed by the Taliban.

The Taliban government has sought greater international recognition and engagement since returning to power in 2021. However, many Western governments have maintained that recognition will depend on changes in areas including human rights, women’s rights and political inclusivity.

Massoud’s remarks reflect the continuing debate over how the international community should deal with the Taliban while addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian and migration challenges.
