Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov has said that strengthening security along Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan is a priority for Moscow’s defence and security policy.
Belousov’s remarks highlight Russia’s continued focus on security developments along Afghanistan’s northern border, particularly in Central Asia. Tajikistan shares a long and strategically important border with Afghanistan, making developments in the region a significant concern for neighbouring states and Moscow.
Russia has maintained close security ties with Central Asian countries and has repeatedly stressed the importance of preventing instability and security threats from spreading beyond Afghanistan.
The focus on the Tajik-Afghan border comes amid continuing concerns over terrorism, militant activity, drug trafficking and other cross-border threats in the region. Any deterioration in security along Afghanistan’s northern frontier could potentially have wider implications for Central Asian countries.
Belousov’s statement indicates that Moscow considers border security an important component of its broader regional defence strategy. Strengthening security cooperation and preparedness along the Tajik-Afghan frontier could therefore remain a key area of Russian engagement with Tajikistan and other Central Asian partners.
The statement also reflects Russia’s broader efforts to monitor developments in Afghanistan and assess their potential impact on regional stability.
With Afghanistan continuing to face complex security and political challenges, the security of its borders with neighbouring Central Asian states remains a major concern for regional governments and international powers.
