Border police in Bosnia and Herzegovina have arrested 96 people in two separate incidents over alleged attempts to enter the country illegally.

According to authorities, the individuals were intercepted while reportedly trying to cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina without the required legal documentation. Among those detained were 18 Afghan nationals.

The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by Bosnian authorities to prevent irregular migration and strengthen controls along the country’s borders. Bosnia and Herzegovina remains an important transit route for migrants and asylum seekers attempting to reach other European countries.

Afghan nationals continue to make up a significant proportion of migrants traveling along routes through the Balkans, often seeking to reach European Union member states after crossing several countries.

Authorities have increased monitoring and patrols in areas commonly used by people attempting to cross borders outside official entry points. Migrants apprehended during such operations can face identification procedures and further action under the country’s migration laws.

The latest arrests highlight the continuing challenges faced by European countries in managing irregular migration, particularly along the Western Balkan migration route.

The incidents also underscore the risks faced by migrants who attempt to cross international borders through unofficial routes in search of safety, employment or better living conditions.

Further details regarding the nationality of the other individuals arrested and their legal status were not immediately available.
