Taliban ambassador to Qatar Sohail Shahin attended the opening ceremony of the “Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion” cultural exhibition in Doha, appearing alongside several high-ranking female officials from Uzbekistan and Qatar.

The exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday, 11 Shahrivar, at Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art, bringing together officials and cultural representatives to showcase Uzbekistan’s historical and artistic heritage.

Images from the event show Shahin participating in the ceremony alongside female officials. His presence has drawn attention because of the sharp contrast between the scene in Qatar and the Taliban’s policies toward women inside Afghanistan.

Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban authorities have imposed extensive restrictions on Afghan women and girls, including limitations on education, employment, public participation and rules concerning clothing and social activities.

The appearance of a Taliban representative at an international cultural event alongside women has therefore prompted discussion about the apparent difference between the Taliban’s participation in international settings and its domestic policies.

The “Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion” exhibition focuses on Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage and its evolution through history. The event in Doha serves as a platform for cultural exchange and international engagement.

The images have attracted particular attention amid continued international criticism of restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan and calls for greater respect for their fundamental rights.
