Tensions within Afghanistan’s political landscape have flared publicly following a sharp exchange between Taliban leadership and veteran political figures.
Jabbar Naumani, a prominent Taliban intelligence official, issued a scathing response to recent remarks made by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of Hezb-e Islami.
In a statement shared on social media, Naumani heavily criticized figures who challenge the current administration.
He asserted that those who historically squandered national sacrifices and yielded to foreign influences are now protesting a regime that established Sharia law.
Naumani dismissed their opposition entirely, writing that critics will “spit venom, but they will not have the power to bite” as they have already been defeated.
He further claimed that such individuals are being given temporary respite to plunge deeper into political isolation.
This fiery rebuttal came on the heels of a video message released by Hekmatyar, in which the Hezb-e Islami leader called upon the people of Afghanistan to prepare for jihad.
Addressing the nation’s severe economic difficulties, widespread unemployment, insecurity, and the refugee crisis, Hekmatyar urged citizens to stand firm against perceived national threats and stated that political change in the country is both inevitable and imminent.
The exchange highlights the deep-seated friction and ongoing political friction between the ruling de facto administration and traditional factions.
