The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that children in Afghanistan continue to face numerous barriers to learning, as the world marks International Literacy Day on Tuesday.

In a message marking the day, OCHA emphasized the importance of literacy in providing children with access to knowledge, opportunities and a safer future.

The UN humanitarian agency said continued investment in education is essential to ensure that children can benefit from these opportunities. OCHA stressed that maintaining access to education is critical for helping every child develop, grow and thrive.

Afghanistan has faced significant challenges in the education sector in recent years, with children affected by restrictions, poverty, displacement and limited access to educational facilities in various parts of the country.

OCHA’s message highlights the broader importance of literacy not only for individual development but also for the future well-being and stability of Afghan society. Access to quality education can help children acquire the knowledge and skills needed to build better lives and contribute to their communities.

The UN agency called for sustained efforts and investment to keep educational opportunities open for children across Afghanistan.

As International Literacy Day is observed globally, the UN’s warning draws attention to the continued challenges facing Afghan children and the need to ensure that education remains accessible to all.
